Ogg Vorbis Project

Ogg Vorbis is probably Xiph.Org's most famous project. Vorbis is a high quality audio compression format meant to replace the current proprietary standard for audio - "mp3".

Some game developing companies have already started using Vorbis to compress their audio rather than paying royalties for using mp3 compression. Vorbis is in the main stream and .ogg files can be played by probably one of the most popular audio players - Winamp. Also Vorbis is supported by the most popular CD-extraction software around which is CDex. The only mainstream market that Vorbis is lacking in is hardware players. I'm sure many of you have heard dozens of times of pocket mp3 players and the like. Unfortunately, I've only heard of one company that has developed a hardware ogg player and that company is relatively small and unknown. In the next few years as Vorbis gets more support though, things could change.

Vorbis is supposedly better quality than mp3s, here is your chance to decide for yourself...Xiph.Org offers a side-by-side comparision of Vorbis against the rest of the industry's audio formats. That site is here. For more information about Vorbis check Xiph's Vorbis homepage and also www.vorbis.com.
