absolute manage: installing agents

we had a server designated as a distribution point for the absolute manage product. unfortunately, it experienced an unrecoverable hardware failure. i (finally) got windows reinstalled on this server and went about reading how to get it set back up as a DP. after browsing through the AM user’s guide it seemed fairly simple…just need to install an AM agent on the server and then from AM Server Center specify a new Distribution Point.

well…it wasn’t as easy as that. AM is a very weird product. the agent install doesn’t ask you for any server details so you have to find this newly installed agent from the AM Agent Deployment Center. i went about creating a custom zone for this single IP address. the machine then showed up in the custom zone. the next step is to right-click it and choose set inventory server. here i had to set all the entries for the AM server (why these are not defaulted i have no idea). once the inventory server was set for the agent then i was finally able to set the machine as a DP.
