vsphere client: performance data not available

from within the vsphere client while looking at charts on the performance tab, you might receive “performance data is currently not available for this entity” when trying to chart weekly/monthly/etc stats. if you also happen to be using mssql on the vcenter server then there’s a good chance the sql agent isn’t running. without the agent running the stat rollup jobs cannot run.

update 10/28/2013:
i experienced a similar problem recently but the cause was something different. the performance overview tab displayed a page that said “this program cannot display the webpage”. the cause was that the “vCenter Web Management Service” had stopped running on the vcenter server. starting this service resolved the issue.
