vsphere: windows 2008 vmware tools upgrade

just a few minutes ago i tried to upgrade vmware tools on a windows 2008 vm. the older version of vmware tools didn’t uninstall correctly. and i couldn’t install the newer version without a clean removal. repair on the MSI didn’t work either.

searching revealed that this is a known problem. running “setup /c” from cmdline will cleanup old reg keys.

the exact error message noted something like “error 1316…etc” (sorry already closed it out).

mandriva 2010.1

i’ve been running 2010 spring on my laptop for about 2 weeks now. no glaring bugs at all in this release. gnome 2.30 and kde 4.4 seem noticeably speedier than previous versions. sound configuration this time around was not a pain at all. my saved wireless configurations are working much better.

initially when i logged into gnome for the first time i had the problem where window borders were missing. i’ve had that issue a couple times now and i always forget the cause and end up googling it again. it’s a sign that you need to turn off 3d desktop effects (compiz) and then reconfigure your video settings. configuring your video settings is something you typically choose to do at the end of a mandriva install. i chose to skip it…so my fault.

the audio player that i love, audacious, has dropped support for their last.fm scrobbling plugin 🙁 that’s a feature that i started to rely on…so now i’m using another audio player called qmmp. probably just until someone creates a new plugin for audacious.

there’s one weird problem happening that i’m still trying to figure out. i do a lot of sftp transfers back and forth between linux devices. ever since i upgraded to 2010.1…my transfers will randomly stall and then just drop altogether. it may just be a coincidence that this is happening right after i upgrade..not sure. i thought of maybe upgrading the openssh version on some of the target devices.

anyways i’ve been very happy with the 2010.1 release.

update 5/26/2011:
audacious has since restored scrobbling support in a later release.

vsphere and broadcom 57711

broadcom 57711 nics were showing up as link down from vcenter. this is on vsphere 4u2.
the bnx2 driver for these nics was 1.45, i updated the driver to 1.48 and no change.

ethtool -i wasn’t revealing any information on those particular nics…so it very much seemed a driver issue. upgraded the driver once more to 1.52 and that resolved the issue.

ethtool -i vmnic9
driver: bnx2x
version: 1.52.12.v40.3
firmware-version: 5.0.12 bc 5.0.13 phy 0aa0:0406
bus-info: 0000:07:00.1

driver update process:
esxupdate –bundle=BCM-bnx2x-1.52.12.v40.3-offline_bundle-223054.zip update

bloody mary

my preferred bloody mary:
clamato/v8, lemon juice, salt, celery salt, pepper, worcestershire, tabasco sauce

pre-made bloody mary mixes:
mr. and mrs. t’s
regular – it’s okay
premium blend – thick, tastes like i’m chewing on straight horseradish; gross
bold and spicy – bit too spicy

tabasco
spicy – not bad…but a little too spicy

my favorite pre-made mix so far is: zing zang (add a little bit of lemon juice)

pepperoncini

i love pepperoncini/peperoncini aka greek peppers. lately i’ve decided to figure out which brand available at the local grocery store is best. in my opinion of course.

available brands:
bella – my favorite thus far
mezzetta – not terribly fond of this
vigo – on par with bella, has the largest peppers that are still intact
mt. olive – total garbage

cyanogenmod

when i first got the g1 (came with android 1.6) i was really happy with it. i was thinking i don’t have any reason to root and install a custom rom. i was content.

that was how it was for the first month..then i encountered my first reason. after only installing about 15 apps or so i ran out of local phone storage. i then had to pick and choose what apps remained installed. on stock android 1.6 you can’t install apps to the SD card either. so this became a strong reason for me to want to install a custom rom.

secondly, it was obvious there would never be any official 2.x android updates coming to the g1. so my only option to mess around with newer android builds (short of buying a new phone) was to install a custom rom.

i chose cyanogenmod as the rom because that’s the most widely known (and probably used) rom. i had heard of cyanogen way before i even had an android phone. and plus it seems that the majority of other roms are based off of cyanogenmod, and CM is still actively developed…so might as well use the original.
