switched to chromium

i never got around to actually building chromium from source on my own – http://resinblade.net/wordpress/?p=162

but i am using a pre-built binary of it on linux now, as well as on windows. i liked it enough to make it my main browser. i had been using firefox since it was phoenix (probably like 8 years), but i’m going to give chromium a try for a while.

g1 rom decisions

with david’s assistance and doing my own reading up on things. i’ve decided to put the following on my g1 once i get a 8gb micro sd card:
latest cyanogenmod 5.x
danger spl
amon_ra recovery

update 5/31/2010:
got my 8gb sd card and yesterday i went through the rooting process, as well as installing a new recovery image and custom rom. the whole process was pretty painless. i don’t really plan on writing my own howto for this subject since there’s so much info out there already. one thing i noticed a lot of though.. was there’s lots of _outdated_ information out there. as in tons.

i waded through lots of howtos that were no longer useful. and that’s to be expected…the g1 isn’t really a new phone anymore. so there’s lots of g1 related info out there that’s no longer maintained, most likely because the author has moved on and gotten a new phone.

sources i found useful:
http://www.androidspin.com
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Main_Page
http://forum.xda-developers.com

you have to be sure to check the dates of the posts on xda though. other than that i knew someone who had already gone through the whole process (david). he was a great help in introducing me to a lot of the sites and answering questions when i had them.

i’ll follow up with more details in another post.

samsung eternity

before i forget to mention…my previous phone which was the samsung eternity has a horrible touchscreen. absolutely horrible. i can’t believe i actually got used to using it. you have a to press super hard to get it to register anything and kind of have to use the tips of your fingers too.

so after about a week of using the t-mobile g1 i turned on the eternity just to see if anyone was sending anything to that phone number still. and i could barely use the touchscreen since i had gotten used to using a decent touchscreen. arghh.

shopping

i was in a bookstore yesterday and i was browsing the selections. i didn’t really get interested/excited by anything i saw. not because i have lost interest in reading and not because all of the selections sucked…or anything like that. it’s just that i think the internet has really ruined my interest in shopping in stores. amazon.com, in my opinion, is just a superior place to purchase books and other items. i can wishlist, read customer reviews, get decent pricing, see similar products, get the item shipped to me in a week or sooner, and so on. i guess the only thing i lose out on is the satisfaction of an immediate purchase and walking away with the item then and there. that…actually doesn’t mean so much to me.

i remember when i was younger being so excited about going to following stores – books a million, barnes and nobles, mediaplay, bestbuy. and now because of the internet i could really care less about being in any of those places.

i’m not really saddened or anything by this. i just view it as an evolution of a process.

and if there was a quality insured, reliable, and cost-effective means of ordering groceries online i would do that too. not because that “shopping” process is better online..but because going to the grocery store is an annoyance.

tmobile g1

enough just talking about it…
so now i have a g1

negotiations fell through with at&t on trying to get a lower monthly rate. everything they offered me was about the same price i was already paying. so we have parted ways. pricing was the main reason but also because of the lack of android phones. every other carrier seems to be embracing android except at&t.

right now at&t just has one android phone, the backflip, and from what i’ve read its features are crippled on at&t…and yahoo as the default search engine…seriously? their second android phone (that hasn’t come out yet) is from dell. i am personally a dell fan, but i doubt a first gen phone from them will be that great. and plus dell has a track record of leaving new markets very early if things don’t work out for them (PDAs, mp3 players, etc).

getting off topic…anyways…so far i’m very pleased with the phone and service.

before getting this phone i had no exposure to android whatsoever. i had only read about it. the current g1 comes with android 1.6. and out of the box i think it’s great and really well thought out. from reading things online it seemed that earlier releases of android were lacking. so i’m glad i waited for the platform to mature a bit.

i will possibly look into rooting the device and maybe messing around with the SDK. whatever i have time for.

upgrade to gigabit ethernet & 802.11n

recently i was wondering what products i could purchase to upgrade my home network. right now i have a 100mbps ethernet/802.11g network. and a decent investment in 802.11g devices – workgroup bridge, wireless camera, music bridge, ethernet bridge, etc.

this mostly stems from curiosity because i’m quite fine with my current set up. but maybe 2 years out i’ll start to get serious on replacing some of the devices.

so first thing would be an N router. i have always been a loyal linksys customer. just this moment i looked at the new linksys/cisco site. and it looks like cisco is either going to come out with brand new linksys products very soon or they’ve killed 3/4 of the product line. if they do the latter they’ve basically ruined linksys for me.

however, looks like asus and netgear offer linux compatible routers.
for a wireless ethernet bridge and a gigabit switch i’d probably just price compare and shop around. brand wouldn’t matter as much to me there.

for a NAS unit replacement i’d get one of the *plug devices, as i’ve mentioned before.

i almost forgot to mention the “why” of this. mostly because file sizes seem to keep getting larger and i find myself trying to move around several GB at a time. and it would be nice if i could do that a bit faster. other than that i have no reason.

update 11/9/11:
i think at the time when i was looking at the cisco/linksys website it was under construction and they’ve since added lots more products. i ended up getting the linksys E2000 802.11n  router and the sheevaplug. i’m not running custom firmware/software either yet, but i plan on putting debian on the plug soon. the tomatoUSB firmware for the E2000 was still listed as semi-experimental the last time i checked…so i’m holding off there. did i see any speed improvements with 802.11n and newer NAS hardware – most definitely.

cellphone thoughts

i think i’ve stated that the nokia n900 is my dream phone. i just have to put that dream on hold because i can’t afford it. so i’ve been thinking about 2nd best.

i see my 2nd best option as being an android phone. not really linux, but linux-based. it’s not really an OS that gives you full control by default, yet the modding community seems healthy…so that kind of makes up for it.

i’d like a new android 2.x phone preferably by HTC. those are all like $200 or so on average. which brings me back to my original financial problem.

my plan C then is to get an older android 1.x phone because they’re cheap. obviously kind of disappointing to buy a “new” phone that’s already 2 years old, but not much else i can do. besides keep using my crappy samsung eternity. no thankssss.

i’m okay with the solution of getting an older android phone. my next issue would be what carrier to go with and is the monthly cost agreeable.

i’m tired of at&t. their pricing remains high and they’re currently not at all android friendly. verizon doesn’t seem to be as bad. don’t know much about sprint. t-mobile seems to one of the original android supporters and also support maemo (meego) based phones.

i’m looking at the t-mobile G1.
monthly pricing would be something like:
$61 for unlimited data only
$71 for unlimited data & texting

poweredge 2850 and windows 2008

windows 2008 installed fine on a 2850, but when booting the OS the screen would just go black. no further information. i did a reinstall and experienced the same exact thing.

turns out you have to use the openmanage systems build and update utility to install windows 2008 on this system. i tried this and it worked fine.
