mandriva 2009.1 (spring)

just upgraded my laptop install of mandriva to 2009.1. one very noticeable problem was that i had no keyboard in X.
quick google revealed i wasn’t alone with this problem.

solution:
boot into rescue
rename /etc/rc5.d/S99messagebus to S96messagebus

i’d like to do a clean install, but i’m too lazy for that…
i’ve upgraded mandriva at least 2 times on this laptop so far. nothing horrible has happened yet.

and
my first impressions of 2009.1 are pretty good. i like gnome 2.26.

added note:
couldn’t get vmware workstation 6.5.2 to compile kernel modules for 2.6.29
found this patch by googling: http://communities.vmware.com/thread/203231
worked great. thank you patch author.

and just for reference, a list of vmware workstation kernel modules:
vmblock, vmci, vmmon, vsock, vmnet

unfinished thoughts from long ago

so i’ve had this theory for a few years now. i was just reading some material that reminded me of it. basically what i was reading suggested that you can go to business school and so on, but having good business sense is like an innate ability. you either have it or you don’t. no amount of anything is going to force you to have it.

i find this sort of thinking to be true. and by that i don’t mean that unless you have an innate ability in something that you can’t succeed. not at all, someone without natural talent in a subject could quite easily become average, above-average, or even great (with practice) at something. those that are born with it though, can become extraordinary.

i’m not at all relating this to myself. just.. over the years i’ve witnessed quite a few people try to get into computery related fields – tech support, programming, networking, etc. and really they have the knack for the field or not…

windows app compatibility

reminder..to not forget about the microsoft application compatibility toolkit (5.0 right now). and possibly to try it out at some point.

salsas

tried one of the pace salsas – tequila lime, it’s yellow-green in color. the limeyness and saltiness is kind of overpowering…which is surprising i thought i would like that. it’s just too much with the limey though.
some of its ingredients list: yellow tomatoes, fresh jalapeno peppers, green chili peppers, lime juice, onions, tomatillos, tequila, cilantro.

finished the pace pico de gallo salsa, it was okay…nothing really fascinating about it. prefer it to the tequila lime one.
trying the triple pepper salsa right now…a supposedly hot salsa. it leaves the mouth with a minor burn, but i wouldn’t really consider it to be hot. the three peppers are serrano, green chilis, and guajillo. really the salsa just tastes like a salsa with heavy cayenne pepper and chili powder.

salsa verde….still pretty unimpressed. maybe it’s because jarred salsa just doesn’t compare to fresh salsa…

2013:
today i tried two of the new tostitos cantina products; they were the roasted garlic salsa and the cantina traditional chips. of course, i was expecting something special…the chips tasted just like doritos minus the cheese flavor. the texture and everything was exactly like doritos. since frito lay makes both brands i wouldn’t be surprised if they actually were doritos prior to being dusted with cheese powder (or however that process works). i found these to be a step down from the normal white colored tostitos (the cantina traditional chips are yellow in color). i wouldn’t buy these again…there’s lots of better chip selections out there.

the roasted garlic salsa tasted just like normal tostitos salsa but with added garlic flavor. you can actually see the chunks of garlic in the salsa. ultimately, nothing special about this salsa either it’s right on par with normal tostitos salsa.

update 1/28/2013:
i have now had the cantina thin and crispy tortilla chips and the cantina chipotle restaurant style salsa. the chipotle salsa is runnier/less-thick like a restaurant salsa. the taste of the salsa is an overpowering punch in the face of chipotle. not super hot but really smoky flavored. i should have guessed it wouldn’t be subtle at all. overall, it’s tolerable but i would never buy it again. the chips however were not bad…i’d say they’re on par with what you get free from moe’s. i’d get the chips again. also i was dismayed when looking at the salsa’s nutritional information on how little nutritional value it had. i guess i should stop messing around with jarred salsas and just get fresh salsa.

2015:
cigar city salsa (mild) – costs about twice as much as other salsas. i liked the texture but the taste not so much. no surprise that it has a smoky flavor but what was surprising was that there was an extremely off-putting tangy flavor to this salsa. i would not get it again.
