toshiba lcd tv 37e200u: low audio output

the 37e200u tv has a great picture but unfortunately has poor native audio output. this usually isn’t too much of an issue because you can simply turn the volume up loud enough to hear tv shows and what not. unfortunately, the problem seems magnified when the A/V source is a dvd player, streaming device, cablebox for on-demand, and so on. for tv shows you typically can leave the volume on 7 to 11 and hear fine. for other A/V devices it’s not uncommon for the audio to have to be on 30 and it’s still difficult to hear at times.

i found that there is a firmware update for the tv that lists a fix for “hdmi low audio level issues”. i have applied this firmware and it does seem to resolve the problem for some A/V devices (however not all). to install the firmware a USB flash drive is needed. the drive has to be formatted as FAT16. i couldn’t get 2GB drives to work, but luckily i had an ancient 16MB drive still.
