dell poweredge r620: installing esxi

i installed esxi 5.1 on an r620 about an hour ago. i’m positive i knew this prior to the install, but must have forgot at some point. you need to download a dell customized iso of the esxi install from support.dell.com. under the server’s drivers and downloads choose “enterprise solutions”.

at first i used a vmware iso and during the esxi installation received a message of “no network adapters”. the installer just quits at that point.

with the dell customized iso, the dual sd cards showed up fine as an installation destination. after the install finished all i had to do was change the bios boot order for hard disks (putting the sd cards above other storage).

i’ve been collecting useful papercut KB articles for quite a while now. i figured it’d be best to combine them all into one source.

also papercut has the best knowledge base that i’ve ever seen. pretty much anything you can think of has been documented already.

vsphere web client 5.1: empty inventory

since upgrading to vcenter 5.1, we’ve encountered an unusual issue with the web client. a vcenter user that has access to inventory and is able to access objects just fine from the vsphere windows client receives the error “client is not authenticated to vmware inventory service” when logging into the vsphere web client.

i figured maybe this was because this user didn’t have access to the root of the hierarchy, which would be the vcenter server object. i tried giving that user read-only permissions to the vcenter server object, but that did not help.

the only way i could get the web client to function for this user was by adding them as a local administrator in windows on the vcenter server. i imagine this has to be a bug…but at this point in time i could not find any vmware KB articles on the subject.

update 12/6/2013:
after upgrading to vcenter 5.1 update 1c (also all hosts on 5.1) this issue has been resolved.

windows 2008 r2 print server: jobs remaining in queues

we recently removed the “manage documents” permission for creator owner to prevent bypassing the pay-for-print system. the permission can be removed from each printer or set globally at the print server level.

we experienced some oddities of old print jobs printing out last week. this morning i examined the print queues on the windows print server and noticed lots of jobs listed…some from 5 days ago. the jobs were listed as “sent to printer” but not cleared from the queue. upon further investigation, it appears that this is some kind of windows 2008 r2 bug. the recommended work around is to set driver isolation to none (set on print drivers). then manually clear the print queues of old jobs.

ducktales (nes)

i didn’t realize until just now that duck tales was stylized as ducktales (one word). anyways, i used to own ducktales on the NES. the first issue of nintendo power i ever owned was the issue with ducktales on the front cover. that was the september/october 1989 issue. i either had a subscription to nintendo power at that point or got one soon after because i had every nintendo power issue after that one for quite a few years.

i did enjoy the ducktales cartoon a lot, but i wasn’t some kind of ducktales super fan. i’m pretty sure i got the NES game because my parents picked it out. i remember the game fondly and recall finishing it like a 100 times or so. every time i finished the game i would try to outdo my score (amount of money) in previous games. i used to have all the maps memorized and was basically a professional at the game.

i just played and finished the game in the first time in easily over 15 years. it’s still a pretty good game, i wouldn’t say it’s a classic like i would for super mario 2 or super mario world, etc. however, it’s still a solid and very enjoyable platformer. i didn’t recall the game having difficulty settings…it has easy, normal, and hard difficulties. so, i’m not sure what difficulty level i used to play the game on or if i ever beat the game on hard difficulty. i finished it on normal today.

one thing that detracts from the gameplay is the somewhat tricky button pressing needed to use the cane. you can’t simply just press the B button for the cane you kind of have to press B and down while jumping. so without a lot of practice there will be moments where you’re planning to use the cane but don’t press the buttons correctly. this easily results in you losing health or dying. you can also get kind of stuck on enemies after being injured and you’ll lose multiple health points on one enemy.

the game is pretty short. i’d say once you know where to go you could easily beat the game in under an hour.

windows dns: primary server down

this particular event happened in the latter half of 2012…i just wanted to notate it for future reference.

a primary DNS server experienced an unrecoverable system failure and was completely down. i wasn’t exactly happy with the situation, but i was not exactly worried either because there was a secondary server running just fine. these servers were hosting traditional primary/secondary zones not AD-integrated zones. since there was a secondary server i didn’t feel an emergency rush to rebuild the failed server. then a day or so later (wish i knew the exact timeline) DNS wasn’t functioning at all. i logged in to check the secondary server and found that all the DNS zones were expired because too much time had gone by since the server was able to contact the primary server.

the quickest solution i could think of was to turn the secondary zones into primary zones and that resolved the problem pretty quickly. i’m not sure if the zone expiration setting is configurable or not. i was focused on getting DNS back up at the time and never researched it further. anyways, something to keep in mind.

windows 2012 core: installing features

a powershell cmdlet is used for installing features in server core now.
run powershell then the cmdlet Get-WindowsFeature to get a list of installable/installed features. run Install-WindowsFeature <feature> to install a new feature or role. to remove features use Uninstall-WindowsFeature <feature>.

it’s interesting that you can even install the GUI feature-set on top of core if you so desired.

a few common features/roles:
DHCP server = DHCP
file server with FSRM = FS-FileServer, FS-Resource-Manager
migration tools = Migration
minimal GUI = Server-Gui-Mgmt-Infra
full GUI = Server-Gui-Shell
WSUS = UpdateServices

a bit off topic, but here’s how you enable RDP for 2012 core:
cscript scregedit.wsf /AR 0
then verify the change with:
cscript scregedit.wsf /AF /v

raiser’s edge: lost password to sample database

if the password is lost to the sample database’s Supervisor account the easiest solution may be to detach the old sample database and reattach a fresh copy from: https://www.blackbaud.com/support/downloads/sample.aspx

decline any BBPS options during initial database access.

related BB articles:
BB66640, BB127066, BB701667

update 4/10/2013:
if you rename the sample database to something different the DSN entries on workstations will still point to the old entry.
related reg key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Blackbaud\REINI_50\General

so…best to keep the database name the same.

update 4/24/2013:
*very important*
found out from BB support that anytime you make ANY slight alteration to the database settings the workstations will attempt to refresh their database info. this typically is not a problem…but it is for non-Admin users with UAC enabled. and apparently if RE isn’t ran as an Admin the first time after database changes then things get kind of messed up. for instance, users will immediately receive “invalid login” when trying to login with RE.

if things progress to this state all is not lost…
the solution is to delete BBUpdate.ini located in c:\users\<username>\appdata\local\virtualstore\program files\blackbaud\the raisers edge 7

then run RE as an Admin have the user login. close RE.
open regedit and rename HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\VirtualStore\MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Blackbaud to something else. close regedit and run RE normally and the problem should be resolved.
