desktop linux

there’s always so much anticipation/speculation about when desktop linux will take over the world. in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s i felt that same sort of enthusiasm, hoping the best for linux because i’m a huge fan.

but nowadays i simply don’t care about the spread of desktop linux. linux satisfied my needs as a desktop OS probably about 5 years ago. so very selfishly, i don’t care about other people’s needs…i care about mine. use the desktop OS that satisfies your needs. and by needs people really mean that the OS runs the apps they require. because really if linux natively ran your important apps why wouldn’t you use it? you’d be foolish not to. and if you’re entirely a web2.0/cloud type of person you’d be retarded not to use linux.

for example if someone was into graphic design professionally and their single tool that they used daily was adobe photoshop. and lets say there was a native linux port of PS…why would you continue to use windows? or further if gimp/krita had the features the professional required why would one continue to use PS? and i mean this in a very practical way (open source movement aside), the software is _free_. so unless someone enjoys throwing money away i don’t see why they wouldn’t make the transition.

sometimes, when i see a person whose computer usage consists of webmail and youtube i’m tempted to recommend them to use linux (just to avoid all the malware problems that accompany using windows). but then i picture at some point they’ll want to run some windows app and then i’ve created a headache for them and myself. so i keep such comments to myself.

i do see linux desktop usage continuing to grow as tech-savvy people and organizations get tired of dishing out $. and really by tech-savvy i don’t mean an engineer level guru, i mean anyone that is willing to try something different, to experiment, to not easily give-up, etc.

i don’t see windows use dying away anytime soon…at least not in the next 20 years or so. i do see linux capturing a decent chunk of the desktop marketshare at some point.

dominos new pizza

when i first saw the commercial about dominos changing their recipe i of course was intrigued…and kind of surprised. it seems like such a major chain would risk a lot by changing their base formula for success. i neither loved nor hated the old recipe, it was just decent average pizza, no strong emotions attached. the old ingredients did seem to be of lesser quality than those of papa johns though.

and of course other people are going to be curious too..so i imagine at least a month or two of way boosted sales. in the long run i hope it works out for them because i’ve tried the pizza and i do think it’s an improvement over the former recipe. it’s much closer to papa johns in apparent quality. there will be people who think otherwise and will hate it, but that’s life.

for instance, when burger king switched over to the new crispy fries i actually missed the old flimsy and soft fries. not that i disliked the new fries i just liked the old ones more.

but anyways it’s good pizza. i miss when dominos used to carry meatball subs.

update: i don’t know why but my local dominos store on like the past 2 occasions has been drowning the pizza with the new zesty garlic butter sauce (which i normally like). to the point where it’s pretty much all i taste and makes the pizza super greasy. whyyyy oh whyyy do you do this.

update 8/3/2010: i ordered the dominos deep dish pizza not too long ago. i remember never really caring for it, but i thought hey they revamped stuff.. maybe it’s different now.  and i also was stupidly thinking it would have more toppings. it does not and it tastes exactly like it did when i had it over 10 years ago. still very dry crust and not enough sauce. do not like.

my smartphone predictions for 2010

my guesses for 2010:
apple will end its exclusivity contract with at&t (if not then there will be further android growth)
blackberry marketshare will drop and keep dropping (good)
windows mobile will start to disappear (hardware vendors will drop it, end user demand is low as well)
webos will keep palm afloat, but not for long
android adoption will surge
the smartphone market will mainly consist of iphones and android phones

and my intentions:
at some point to get either an android or maemo phone. have it last for at least 2-3 years. switch to t-mobile.

update 1/3/2011:
so how right was i? i’m pretty sure iphones will be on verizon in 2011 (not 2010). i believe blackberry marketshare is neither growing or shrinking in vast numbers, but rather remaining stagnant. windows phones did not disappear and surprisingly microsoft came out with a new version of their mobile operating system called windows phone 7. however, i don’t think anyone expects it to make much headway in the already crowded market. palm did disappear as it was swallowed up by HP. though, HP intends to keep webos alive. android adoption was indeed crazy in 2010. and yes, the market is pretty much down to apple’s iOS and google’s android.

i did get an android phone and i did switch to t-mobile. since i bought a somewhat obsolete phone though, there’s no way it’s going to last 2 years. i already plan on getting a t-mobile g2 sometime in 2011.

nautilus extensions, kompozer

a feature that i personally find useful in modern versions of windows explorer is the option (in list view) to list additional mp3 info. there’s really only one column that interests me: bitrate. for my weird auditing purposes i like to make sure that my music collection is at least 128kps minimum, preferably 192kpbs. only 320kpbs or flac for music i truly love. my hearing can’t tell the difference, it’s just a peace of mind sort of thing.

so gnome’s nautilus (currently) doesn’t seem to have this feature. i hope it’s included in a future release. until then…someone has created a pretty cool script that add this functionality to nautilus. packages needed are: nautilus-python, mutagen, python-exiv2. the script is called bsc-v2.py. move/copy that script to ~/.nautilus/python-extensions.
got all that info from here: http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/5211

this (of course) should function on any distro, not just ubuntu. also i could not find this functionality in kde’s dolphin either.

i stumbled upon another extension that i also find useful. it’s called “nautilus-image-converter”. which adds some basic image manipulation options to the right-click context in nautilus. i use it for batch resizing. it’s true that i could achieve the same thing via CLI or any of many GUI tools..but it’s just so convenient to do it from the file manager itself. this utility reminds me a lot of the windows xp power toy called “image resizer”.

and finally, the latest builds of kompozer 0.8 alleviate the crashing problems on systems that are using more recent releases of GTK+.

debian slug (still the best thing ever)

as of late i’ve been more focused on using $ for eating food rather than buying playthings. ahh i miss the days when i had surplus income to buy things to experiment with every few months. i suppose in a way it’s a good thing…because now i focus on getting items that i need (or think i need), instead of just accumulating a lot of stuff.

anyways, due to a christmas gift i was able to purchase a few items that i’d wanted for quite sometime. #1 a usb2.0 hi-speed hub (powered). i hooked this up to the slug and then connected two more drives to the hub. my slug now has 4 drives hooked to it :). this should make using rsync much quicker too. so now there’s a huge amount of my personal data available to me 24/7. that makes me very happy. sometime in 2010 or 2011 i’d like to get some larger external drives. something like 1 or 1.5TB. 500GB doesn’t seem to cut it anymore.

at the time of researching usb hubs that definitely work with linux i found that some people also hook usb audio adapters to their slugs. to play music of course. i looked into getting one because the idea intrigued me. there’s several on amazon for under $10. i got a $3 one and i figured if it doesn’t work big deal..it’s 3 bucks. it does indeed work. i’ve found out from this site – http://www.hermann-uwe.de/blog/playing-audio-on-the-nslu2, that you need to play files with madplay because the slug lacks floating-point hardware. the bad news is that i can hear noise in the playback. i’m not sure if that’s because the adapter is so cheap or because i have so many powered devices nearby. it’s acceptable though and does work.

the audio adapter is very cheap looking and has “3d sound” printed on it. model#: PUSBSCXXAD01 [J 82]
in debian it’s detected as: Bus 001 Device 009: ID 0c76:1607 JMTek, LLC.

the usb hub is a belkin 7-port mobile hub (F5U701-BLK)

linux nvidia drivers

the pc i run opensuse on is approx. 10 years old. i mostly use it as a file server and a few other functions. not so much as a desktop…but i decided to install nvidia drivers just to try out desktop effects. just because.

i installed nvidia drivers probably about 5 years ago and remember it as a painless process. at the time i think there was only one branch of linux drivers. now there are 4 driver branches. because of this pc’s age i need to use the oldest branch 71.86.xx for a geforce2 gts card. while looking into all this i found out that suse has nvidia repositories to make the installation foolproof. unfortunately, the repositories don’t have any packages for the driver branch i need. so that left the manual process of installing the nvidia driver. that process is fairly easy too. just let the nvidia package build the kernel module for you and reconfigure x.

i did all that, the module built successfully. starting x in a reconfigured state failed though. i did a limited amount of research on the problem and it seems that this particular driver currently doesn’t work with the recent x.org release. oh well. i don’t think i’ll spend any more time tinkering with it.

beer (in a glass)

one million years ago when i first drank beer. it was in cans..i then graduated to mostly only wanting it in bottles. i have mixed feelings about draft beer. sometimes it’s amazingly fresh and crisp tasting. other times it’s all watery and cheap and way worse than drinking it from a bottle. i think that depends on how the establishment that serves the beer operates.

anyways, so now what i’m all about is pouring beer into a nice beer glass. especially a chilled glass. why do i enjoy this better? since the beer is in a glass i’m more apt to drink it slowly and actually enjoy and savor the beer. the appearance of ice cold beer in a glass is very appetizing too. overall, i think it just makes for a much better beer drinking experience.

some research i did on finding a good beer glass revealed:
standard beer bottle = 12 fluid oz
pint = 16 fluid oz

glass that is 40 centiliters = 13.5 fluid ounces
a glass of this size is perfect.

CORRECTION:
i bought a 40 centiliter glass and it has more than enough room for a standard bottle of beer. somehow my perfect calculations failed. i imagine a 30 centiliter glass would better fit a standard bottle of beer.

netbooks

i don’t have much to do with netbooks. i think it’s a novel idea, just too expensive at the moment. currently..what are they like $300? throw on another $350 and you can get yourself a super laptop.

if they end up getting in the $100ish range i may get one someday. i’d like one with an ARM-based processor. but by the time i’m really interested in one i could probably get a phone like a nokia n900 that would basically be my netbook. i honestly think a high-powered smartphone would be the better route for me. 90% of the time i’m around computers either a desktop or a 15inch laptop. so i’m not mobile that much. and if i was i wouldn’t be thinking i better bring my netbook with me…. no, but i would have a phone with me.

so actually i don’t think the netbook market is much for me, but again, the idea is cool.

also…i just worked on one today. a dell inspiron mini 10v. for future reference it only takes 512MB and 1024MB SO-DIMMs..i really shouldn’t use plural since it only has one memory slot. a slot which takes removing the systemboard to access :(.

sharepoint database logs

our sharepoint database logs were some crazy 80GB in size. which made no sense.
this article pointed us in the right direction: http://geekswithblogs.net/RogueCoder/archive/2008/06/03/122588.aspx

evidently this is what happens when the databases have “full recovery mode” enabled.
