dell latitude e6510 – hdmi audio

more than a year ago i spent an entire weekend trying to get HDMI audio out working on a latitude e6510. the video worked fine, but i was stuck with no audio. i remember trying just about everything to get it to work. i was having one of those moments where you feel like such a moron because you can’t get something so simple to work.

the problem turned out to be the version of the nvidia driver i was using. i rolled back to an older release – nvidia NVS 3100M version 8.16.11.8974 and the HDMI audio out functionality was restored. all the newer driver releases seemed to break this functionality. i had an idea of installing the old functional driver first and then doing a custom installation of the new driver…then choosing not to install the newer audio drivers. i never got around to testing that idea.

the HDMI setup i had going on has become unimportant to me, as i have an alternate method of accomplishing what i wanted to. so i probably will never mess around with this again…i just wanted to notate the solution in case it ever did become important to me again.

unity connection – database proxy service

since i need the database proxy service running very infrequently, i often forget the steps required to enable it.
so here they are:

  • in connection administration->system settings->advanced->connection administration
database proxy: service shutdown timer needs to have a value greater than 0
  • unity connection serviceability – log in with application administrator account
activate the connection database proxy service and make sure the status changes to started

unity connection – message currently not available

today i verified that a user was unable to listen to a specific voicemail message while logged into unity connection. they could log in fine, but when they chose to play new messages they heard “message currently not available”. the only article i could find regarding this issue was this: https://supportforums.cisco.com/message/3307034#3307034

i chose the solution of rebooting the subscriber server and that did indeed solve the problem. if the problem becomes more frequent i’ll have to look into other solutions.

to reboot:
SSH in as system administrator account
run utils system restart

upgrading fedora

not too long ago i was upgrading fedora 14 to 15 then 15->16. i was trying to use the official method by upgrading thru yum, but the upgrade process kept getting hungup on a gvfs package. i couldn’t seem to get around this nor could i find a solution online. i eventually found an alternate method of upgrading the distro on a blog.

the minimum amount of steps required:
yum update
yum install preupgrade
preupgrade

and that’s it, the distro is automatically upgraded.

far more details here…

crystal defenders (android)

i don’t purchase many apps/games on android unless they’re fairly cheap. so that makes me a fairly typical android user. i made an exception to buy the square-enix title crystal defenders not because i was excited about the title, but more so because square-enix was attached to it. by purchasing it i was hoping to contribute to the cause of showing square there is an android market for their games. in doing so i’m hoping they’ll eventually port over some of their classic games to the platform.

the game costs a ridiculous $7. since playing it several times i have determined it’s surely worth no more than a $1. it seems like a fairly low quality port, but that’s not really where my complaints lie. the graphics and the tie-in to the final fantasy world are good & the overall concept is decent. my problem with it is that it’s probably the worst tower defense style game i’ve ever played. the core gameplay itself is not fun at all in my opinion. i’ve gathered that the strategy revolves around clumping groups of like character jobs in sections of the maps. for example, you’ll need to put 6 to 9 mages in one location for success. maybe i’m just missing something, but i hardly find playing the game worthwhile. a very disappointing release from square-enix…hopefully they’ll release some good games to the platform in the future.

st. augustine, march 2012

i was mostly disappointed with a recent trip to st. augustine. usually it’s a nice place to visit on the weekends just to walk around and have some good food and drinks.

here’s how the day went….
stopped at the burrito works to have a quick lunch. it’s decent food somewhat comparable to a moe’s. obviously nothing authentic about it, but like i said decent.

then we stopped at the hyppo and found out it’s in a different location now. i’m assuming it has changed owners/management because it’s now a paleta/hipster coffee bar. the paletas were okay, but what was really disappointing was there were only 3 flavors available. compared to my last visit when there were like 12 and lots of unique flavor combinations.

some point later on we stopped at sangria’s to have some drinks. now, last time i stopped by there was close to 2 years ago and i had an excellent experience. everything was of very high quality and the sangrias were superb and i didn’t mind paying $8 a piece for them because they were worth it. this time around everything was of much lower quality which makes me angry about the high prices. we ordered one appetizer that was inedible and i’m almost certain someone was trying to serve us food that had gone bad. they just thought they could conceal the not-so-freshness by overcooking it and adding tons of salt. whatever management is running this place now has ruined it in my opinion. which is a real shame.

most of the shops are tourist traps for junk t-shirts, hot sauces, ice cream/popsicles, beef jerky, etc. you really have to look hard to find the unique shops that are worth a visit. it’s still a lovely place just to walk around and look at sights though.

the redeeming part of the trip was the tasting room. i’ve wanted to go for a long time but was put off by the seemingly high prices. so i finally went and it was a really good experience. and surprisingly got out under $100 even with dessert and drinks. i was overly full from the food too. so that’s one place i’m looking forward to visiting again.

audacious 3.x

yesterday, i noticed i could no longer play wma files with audacious in ubuntu. and i was fairly certain that i was able to before. did some googling and it appears that ubuntu 11.10 ships with a much older version of audacious (still in the 2.x series). the webup8 PPA carries a newer 3.x version of audacious where the wma playing functionality is restored.

to add the PPA run:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8

vsphere 5.0 licensing

as time goes on it becomes more important to take a closer look at vsphere 5 and esxi in general. i was just watching a presentation on vram licensing that was laughable. the way they try to marketing-speak explain that this is an improvement on the licensing model and that physical constraints are removed, this is more cloud-like, and so on. now, i’m aware that everyone has hated this concept since it was announced and i’m not just jumping on that played out bandwagon* (more on this later)….but plain and simple this was a horrible decision on vmware’s part. there was so much public outcry because the motivation behind the change was so obvious – greed. sure, vmware as a business needs to find new ways to bring in more profits and please stockholders, etc. but common sense says that in order to grow your profits you first need to maintain your current profit levels. one way not to do this is to lose customers and i firmly believe that if you poke at customers too much they begin looking at alternative products/companies. netflix is a good recent example of this principle. they jerked around customers enough that close to 1 million left. it didn’t destroy netflix or anything but losing anywhere from 8-16million dollars a month in revenue has to hurt somewhat.

and in vmware’s case there are viable alternatives nowadays – hyper-v, linux kvm, citrix xen. and these are alternatives that most vmware customers probably thought they would never take a serious look at…but maybe they are now. anyways, to summarize this long drawn out rant it was a horrible decision and remains to be so. it’s common knowledge with 4-cores, 8-cores, 10-cores, that CPU resources are hardly in short supply. what is scarce is RAM. the majority of people are getting a 1U or 2U server with 2 physical multi-core processors and loading them with vast amounts of RAM. someone at vmware realized this and their eyes cartoonishly became dollar signs.

vram licensing scheme (scheme being a very appropriate word here):
enterprise plus – 96GB
enterprise – 64GB
standard – 32GB

currently, we use up 12 licenses in the vsphere 4.x licensing model. we have a total of approx. 882GB of pooled physical RAM. 882 / 96 = 9.2…so it seems we could get away with 10 licenses…2 less than we’re currently using? however, i don’t know pricing yet…so who’s to say that twelve 4.x licenses are more expensive than ten 5.x licenses.

*on the topic of jumping on hateful bandwagons i have personally never agreed with everyone’s hatred of Windows Me. every time a group of people discuss it in forums or in person everyone’s like “lol that god awful piece of crap sucked so much”. even microsoft representatives join in on the “joke” by saying “yeah, haha, what were we thinking??” i feel like i used Me for at least a year or two and never had any problems with it since upgrading from 98SE. i simply remember it as being Windows 98 plus some features from Windows 2000. i guess i would love to hear valid complaints instead of just badmouthing something because everyone else does.

i also could stick up for Windows Vista just the same. i can at least remember some of the issues with the initial release of Vista – performance and general bugginess. definitely not ready to deploy in an enterprise, but it was acceptable for a personal desktop. with SP1 it became even more useable and with SP2 it basically was Windows 7. so the whole Vista hate and 7 love has never made any sense to me…

vmware data recovery 2.0

to upgrade from a vdr 1.x appliance:

  • unmount any CIFS shares while the vdr appliance is idle
  • shutdown and delete or rename vdr 1.x appliance
  • deploy vdr 2.0 appliance
  • configure vdr 2.0 appliance and re-add CIFS shares
  • manually perform an integrity check

there’s no method to directly upgrade a vdr 1.x appliance to a vdr 2.0 appliance. it simply must be replaced.

vsphere client: performance data not available

from within the vsphere client while looking at charts on the performance tab, you might receive “performance data is currently not available for this entity” when trying to chart weekly/monthly/etc stats. if you also happen to be using mssql on the vcenter server then there’s a good chance the sql agent isn’t running. without the agent running the stat rollup jobs cannot run.

update 10/28/2013:
i experienced a similar problem recently but the cause was something different. the performance overview tab displayed a page that said “this program cannot display the webpage”. the cause was that the “vCenter Web Management Service” had stopped running on the vcenter server. starting this service resolved the issue.
